“If you don’t like something, change it; if you can’t change it, change the way you think about it.”
…Mary Engelbreit
So much already have been said on positive thinking and I’m certain most of us can agree that its better to think positive than negative. What does that really mean though? Think positive! What exactly is positive thinking?
Positive thinking is a mental and emotional attitude that focuses on favorable expectancy, it produces an optimistic attitude. It is a mode of perception in which we view the world from the laws and operations of thought.
A positive thinking person anticipates good outcomes, they attract happiness, health and success, they can come up against great odds and be able to find peace in the midst of the situation.
When we talk about a positive attitude, its important to define what attitude is. Our attitude is the composite of our thoughts, feelings and actions in relation to the situation. Therefore a person with a positive attitude, thinks, feels and acts in accordance with their positive expectancy.
“The greatest discovery of any generation is that a human can alter his life by altering his attitude of mind.”
…William James
A Positive Attitude
With a positive attitude we tend to attract more favorable circumstances of health, happiness and well being in life. Our whole being resonate with lightheartedness, happiness and success. A positive attitude towards life affects for health in such a major way; we feel better about our life and the circumstances we face. A person with a good attitude takes better care of their body, they have an understanding that it takes a great deal of energy to constantly be at your best and as such they strive to keep their energy reserve high.
A Person’s Attitude is Contagious
We affect, and are affected by the people we are around and the people meet, in one way or another. This happens on a subconscious level, through words, thoughts, feelings, and even through body language.
A persons attitude radiates from them, we have all felt it. Around some people you feel optimistic, at ease and even relaxed. The converse is also true, some people have bad vibes, you feel low energy around them, your thoughts tend to be negative with them and a state of unease is dominant.
Negative thoughts, feelings and actions must create results of like kind and as we observe these results we tend to perpetuate the negative cycle. This is the way to failure, frustration and disappointment. Lets break that cycle, lets make the decision right now to stop entertaining negative thoughts, to stop engage in negative discussions.
Keys to Develop a Positive Attitude
“A man’s mind may be likened to a garden, which may be intelligently cultivated or allowed to run wild; but whether cultivated or neglected, it must, and will, bring forth. If no useful seeds are put into it, then an abundance of useless weed seeds will fall therein, and will continue to produce their kind.”
…James Allen
The beautiful thing is, we can all develop a positive attitude. Whether you were brought up in conditions of total negativity, with a decision and consistency you can change your mental programming to one of positive expectancy. In order to turn the mind toward the positive, some inner work is required.
Feed your mind with positive, empowering and inspirational information.
The one point that all the great philosophers of history have agreed on is that; ”We Become What We Think About.”
Knowing this we have to become aware of our thoughts. A good way of observing our thoughts is in observing what we allow to go into our mind. Watch your environment, the conversations you engage in, what you read, listen to and watch
We have to make a conscious effort to feed our mind with uplifting, empowering and inspirational information. Especially if you find yourself in an environment where this positive information is not the norm. Where to find these positive, empowering information:
- Books – Readers are leaders is not just empty words. Successful people have written down how they did it. There are books on relationships, health, happiness, you name it and someone has written about it. One of my mentors who I have never actually met, but have spent hours with through books and audio programs like to say; “be a student not a follower.”
- Audio Programs – This is another great resource, especially if you make the excuse that you cant find the time to read books. It is so easy to find audio books, seminars and short inspirational videos on the web. Use whatever platform available to you to find positive materials to listen to, turn your car in a mobile classroom. Realize that your thoughts are shaping your life. This is usually a subconscious process, but it is possible to make the process a conscious one. Even if the idea seems strange to you, give it a try, by being more conscious of what you are allowing to go into your mind you are already planting seeds for a different reality.
- Visualization and Affirmation – Use your imagination to visualize only favorable and beneficial situations. See yourself in your minds eye doing the things you want to do. Visualize your days going well, people being more cooperative, see and hear yourself being more positive and optimistic. Use positive words in your inner dialogue, or when talking with others. Make a list of a few positive affirmation and read them often throughout your day.
Listen, we are all a product of conditioning both genetic and environmental, now that you have decided to change this programming, its up to you to use whatever tools available to produce the results you have chosen.
Once a negative thought enters your mind, you have to be aware of it, and strive to replace it with a constructive one. If the negative thought returns, replace it again with a positive one. It is as if there are two pictures in front of you, and you have to choose to look at one of them, and disregard the other. Persistence will eventually teach your mind to think positively and replace negative thoughts.
It doesn’t matter what your circumstances are at the present moment. Think positively, expect only favorable results, beneficial situations, and circumstances will change accordingly. If you persevere, you will create the positive attitude you are striving for. This positive attitude will now create the results that are in resonant with them and you now find yourself in a new cycle; your positive attitude produces positive results which in turn feeds your positive attitude which again leads to greater positive results and as that momentum builds you find yourself living in a totally new reality, with the confidence the poet had when he stated: “I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul.”[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
